About Kate Smith

Landscape and nature are at the centre of my art practice. My fascination with light, space and colour in the natural world inspires me to keep making art. I work primarily in drawing and painting, making use of traditional and experimental techniques.

Being an artist does not come with any official job title, but I would describe myself as in transition from early career to mid-career artist. I have completed art school, held nine solo shows, been part of selected exhibitions (including finalist in Broken Hill Outback Art Prize, ACT Historic Places Prize, Agendo Prize). I also do illustration work, commissions and teach art. More importantly, I would say I am becoming a mid-career artist because I have evolved from jumping around between styles, mediums and inspirations, to painting from my own vision.

I continue to love the challenge of painting – how to bring together observation, soul, technical knowledge and emotion to reflect a moment of inspiration. I am always looking for better ways to paint and look forward to many more art adventures.

I am based in Canberra, Australia. I can be contacted by email: katesmithart@gmail.com
